The Reality of Running AP and AR Out of Tally at 11pm

Tally is where the books live. It's rarely where the actual chasing, matching, and following up happens — that's usually happening at night, manually.

This is a composite too — but for a huge number of small and mid-sized businesses across India, some version of this is a genuinely accurate description of a normal week. Tally is where the books live. It's rarely where the actual chasing, matching, and following up happens.

The day job and the books happen at different times

For a lot of owner-operators, running the business happens during the day, and Tally entry happens after — invoices from the day's WhatsApp messages and emails, purchase entries, GST-related bookkeeping, all done at night because there wasn't a quiet stretch of daytime to do it in. It works, but it means the person who understands the business best is also the one doing the most repetitive data entry, at the hour they're most tired.

Invoices arrive everywhere except one place

A supplier sends an invoice over WhatsApp. Another emails a PDF. A third hands over a physical bill. All of it eventually needs to get into Tally, but there's no single intake point — just a nightly ritual of gathering whatever came in that day from wherever it landed, and typing it in by hand.

Receivables follow-up is whatever's left in the tank

Tally shows what's outstanding, but chasing it down — a phone call, a WhatsApp reminder, a polite follow-up email — is a separate, manual step that happens only when there's energy left for it. It's often the first thing that gets skipped during a busy week, which means the customers most likely to be forgotten are exactly the ones who most need a reminder.

GST-related bookkeeping adds a layer that can't slip

Unlike some of the other entry work, GST-related reconciliation has real deadlines attached to it, so it tends to get done even when everything else is behind — often at the cost of whatever else was supposed to happen that evening. The result is a constant trade-off between what's urgent and what's actually important, decided nightly, under time pressure.

Why this is so common, not a sign of a badly run business

None of this reflects poor management — it reflects the reality of a business owner wearing every hat, with Tally handling the accounting record well but offering little structure for the intake, follow-up, and approval work that surrounds it. That gap is filled by whoever's available, at whatever hour is available, which is usually late.

How Vyomiyra helps

Vyomiyra is built to capture invoices as they arrive — from email or a shared inbox — structure the approval and payment workflow around them, and keep receivables follow-up running consistently instead of only when there's time left in the day. Tally support is on the roadmap alongside the QuickBooks, Xero, and Zoho Books integrations already live today, so the books stay exactly where they belong.
